Garden Orientation

Are you interested in volunteering to work in the AALC gardens but unsure of where to begin?  You've come to the right place!  Here is everything you need to know to get started weeding, watering and mulching.

Getting Started
After you check in as a visitor at the front desk (if you're working during school hours), simply stop by the garden shed near the parking lot.  You'll find a list of tasks posted inside the shed to help you get started.

The shed contains gloves, shovels, hand tools, and other supplies.  Wheelbarrows can be found near the garden shed or inside the vegetable garden.

Weeding
Bring a wheelbarrow with you when you head over to one of the garden areas to pull weeds.  Start weeding!  We will soon add some photos and descriptions of common weeds to the garden shed to help you identify which plants to pull.

Do your best to pull the roots when weeding to prevent the weeds from regrowing.  Pile the weeds into your wheelbarrow, which you can empty into the compost bins near the vegetable garden.

Watering
Inside the garden shed you'll find a key that can be used to turn on the outdoor water faucets located on the school building around the property.  Simply insert the key and twist to turn on the water.  Hoses and sprayers are typically found right near the faucets.  When you're finished watering, remember to return the key to the garden shed.

Mulching
Bales of hay and sea grass can be found near the garden shed and vegetable garden.  Shredded wood mulch is also available between the parking lot and garden shed.

Simply load some mulch into a wheelbarrow, bring it to the garden area you're working on, and start mulching!  You can spread a 1 to 2 inch layer of mulch around the plants.
